Renters Resource: Violations

How do I know if my residence has a violation?

  • Use this checklist. The checklist covers many aspects of a property, from lawn and driveway to natural lighting requirements. Once you've gone over the checklist, if you answer NO to any of the questions your residence most likely has a maintenance violation.
  • These maintenance violations under chapter 14.05 "Building Maintenance and Repair Standards", are the City of Whitewater's current maintainance requirements for any habitable building.

My residence has a violation. Now what?

  • Depending on the violation and the details of your lease, it could be your responsibility or your landlord's responsibility to fix the problem. The majority of the time the responsibility lies with the landlord.
  • If you find a violation, go to Tenants Rights to find out how to correct it.

I'm not sure if the property has a violation or not.

  • If you're unsure about a violation, call the city neighborhood service director, Bruce Parker, to clarify any inquires.
